glazing in and outside a story

every pot glazed in the uchida studio in kyoto,
was glazed first inside, then outside.

often two glazes.
black outside, white inside.
and if was done to perfection.

2 buckets of glaze.
pour with a dipper and fill the inside of the cup.
to the rim.
count the seconds.
pour it out and turn the cup so that spillage will go round
the lip. three times.
wax the bottom.
now, place your hand inside the dry cup and plunge it into the
next glaze. to the rim...just to the rim.
count the seconds.
now you have white glaze inside, black glaze outside.
we then placed the cup on a banding wheel and spun it,
with a brush we ran the black glaze right next to the white.
perfect.

clean the bottom
fire.
as with everything in a quality studio...the problems are all worked
out ahead. skill, understanding of materials, knowledge of the craft
and exemplary skill of the workers. it is called craftsmanship.
no metaphor or story.

quality pots, made for discerning buyers. and the buyers pay for
the perfection. and the audience appreciates great pottery.
here we adore `awful television`...and we are trained to want bad stuff.
and, if you cannot make a decent form, put a lot of decoration all over
the pot, knick knacks. try and cover the bad form.
