After you decide on some glazes to make you are going to find that
you will need some other ingredients. Short of buying every chemical
in the catalog this will invariably happen.
It looks like the previous owner was into slip casting as 3 or 4 or
the things you have are for that branch of ceramics.
The book you mention will get you started but for a real over view of
ceramics get Vince Pitelka's book "Clay A Studio Handbook".
It is complete and up to date and if you read it cover to cover you
will know more than many MFA graduates do about the broad field of
ceramics.

I bought a used kiln and was given some glaze making ingredients. I have
never mixed my own glazes. I always rented studio space and used their
glazes. I like to throw. Couldn't care less about the glazes...until now.
No, I haven't bought "Mastering Cone 6 Glazes" yet. Maybe someone out
there can help me just get a starting point. My pots are piling up waiting
for glazes.

Most are in either 1lb. coffe cans or 1 gallon jars.
Here is what I have:

steric acid
copper carb
soda ash
epk
flint
whiting
barium carb
benton

coconut oil soap

chrome oxide
copper oxide
cobalt oxide
nickel oxide
iron oxide
zinc oxide

and about 15 glaze stains in little envelopes

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Dawn in Phila

Read some books or websites. Seriously. You have to be careful about
handling these ingredients. You have a lot of toxic ingredients there and
they must be handled properly. Buy yourself a good mask. You are going
to either need to add a Frit or some Feldspar to your list of ingredients
to make a stable glaze IMO. Ask your studio if you can buy some from them.

Go to
http://ceramic-materials.com/cermat/education/index.html#Glazes
http://www.frogpondpottery.com/glazestability/stableglazes.html

Read as much as you can. Find a stable base that you like and try out
with your colorants in very small percentage (1-3%) or use all your
colorants as underglaze with a good liner glaze over.

Good luck! Donna

I have been reading everything I can get my hands on. I am awaiting the arrival of my new copy of "Mastering Cone 6 Glazes". The link to the article on glazes is great. Thanks for your input.
