Dear Clayfolk,

I got an e-mail from a fellow Clay person, and after I had responded,
decided that it may be worthwhile to share the content of that e-mail so
here it is.

It's been a while. What is the deal with your computers? You say five?
All at home? I have four - all at home. I have a home network set up
that works pretty good. I have a high speed broadband modem that
connects me to the Internet, and downstream from that is a Linksys
Wireless-G Broadband Router. I have three computers hardwired to it
using LAN cables, and one wireless connection to a computer at the far
end of the house. I also have a Linksys Wireless adapter on my printer -
also in another part of the house - and all four computers are linked to
the wireless adapter to enable printing by the four computers. Works
really great. It has been an adventure learning how to work with and
maintain all this stuff.

My latest computer fun thing has been to venture into the world of
personal servers. I got completely frustrated when trying to send large
files of 4,5,and 6 gigs to friends and kept getting busted by the e-mail
servers. Now I can set up personal accounts with User ID and Passwords
specific to my friends and have my friends log onto my personal
computer, and download any size file I put in their folder. Sometimes I
cut the file into smaller pieces for ease and speed of downloading,
using something like MasterSplitter, and my friends can, after
downloading, simply double click on the key file and the whole thing
will automatically re-assemble itself on their computer - some halfway
around the world - very cool stuff. The system works slick as a whistle.

BTW, the server software is a freebie called Filezilla. Works great.
There were some firewall issues that had to be worked out, though.

Regards operating systems - I run an Intel based system and I find that
Windows XP w/ Service Pak 2 works really great for my purposes. I lived
though all the other MS versions of Windows and this is the first one I
ever really liked. It has it problems, but nothing like the previous
stuff. I've been reluctant to move up to Vista because it is so new, and
I know for a fact there have been problems. So I will wait a while on
that one. I am not yet motivated to move to Linux yet. Maybe someday.

There is no reason to email large files. I use ourmedia.org as
a place to store large files for download.
