wholeround shelves

I just got a batch of whole round shelves instead of halves. I know the
rap about 3 vs 4 points. But 3 points just doesn't seem like very much
with these 21" rounds. Is it adequate? Preferable?

TIA

For what it's worth the good folks at Seattle Pottery Supply told me
to go with 4 points. Made sense to me because then the stilts line up
if you go to split shelves. So far so good (but I don't fire nearly
as often as you production folks).

I have been firing with my bottom shelf a round up 1" from the base.
My thought was that that would even out the firing of the foot of the
lowest pots and save the brick on the base. So if I desperately need
that extra 1 3/4" is it ok to stack directly on the brick? (My kiln
does not have an element in the base like the ConeArt).

Hi!

I've been using round shelves for about 8 years (same shelves). I use 3
point config. I try to have "legs" aligned over each other. Some shelves
are showing cracking part-way in, but none have broken through to date.

I fire to ^10.

Hope this helps.

It's very simple really, if you want your shelves to crack; use 4 posts, if
you prefer not to have your shelves crack 3 is fine... Just make sure that
the posts are positioned equally apart from each other, in other words ; a
perfect tripod. J. Kirk, Glen Echo Pottery

Evan,

I would not fire with the shelf directly on the bottom of the kiln, as
that would create quite a temperature difference between the top and bottom
of the shelf itself. If you remove the shelf, you will get a cold spot in
the bottom of the stack.
