where to find 1cm square mosaic tile

updated mon 30 sep 96

A handicapped person I want to help desires to to use
1 cm x 1 cm (i.e. 3/8" x 3/8") mosaic tile as a design
editing medium, much in the way those able to use
computers exploit pixel-based "painting" programs.

While it was common to use such material to say, decorate
patio table tops a quater century ago, I now find it
almost impossible to locate suppliers.

Most of the material I have found is glass (and is not
a simple box-shaped unit) or premium-cost ceramic of
limited color gamut.

I have seen "children's art kits" which include 100 such
tiles and some assorted baubles at US $15 a kit, (i.e.
15 cents per mosaic tile!) But the glass tiles of which
I wrote about above run a mere 1 to 2 cents each.

Can someone help me out? Phone numbers, addresses or Web
sites will be appreciated; do please mail a copy of your
reply directly to me at: docdtv@ilinks.net!

Thanks so very much for your kind and able help.

Here are some addresses you can check out. They're from some old craft

RF-

Check out the materials page in George Fishman's tutorial on mosaic at:

http://www.aimnet.com/~tcolson/pages/gfishman/tesssrc.htm

A quick email to George might yield even more info. He is a helpful and
generous guy.

Hope this helps!

If what you are looking for is already glazed tile, I suggest you look at
your local large hardware distributor--here in DC it is either Hechingers
or Home Depot. In their flooring department they sell 12 X 12 sheets of
this type of tile for bathrooms, etc. Also, you might want to call people
who lay tile and ask for their discontinued sample tiles. I'm sure there are
some of those out there. Also, you may wish to use a tile cutter and cut
out small squares from larger ones. This would also provide a variety in
shape and size, which might bring some welcome visual relief from the
same size pixels.
