what kind of clay for tiles?

I am having a trouble with my tiles in that they are warping. What kind
of clay is best suited to tile making. I am just using an all purpose
stoneware purchased from the local pottery. Thanks

Have you enough grog in the stoneware you are working with? There are
specific clay bodies that you can buy especially for tile making.

Are you not moving the tiles after you cut them? The clay has a memory.

Good tip: Get some drywall board and cut a few pieces the same size.
Layer your tiles between these as they dry, it helps them dry more evenly
and the pressure from the top board helps alot. Of course this method only
works if your tiles are not relief.

I'm sure there are other clay bodies that will work. Mine is based on a
rough formula given by Peter King long ago. 1/3 fireclay, 1/3 ball clay,
and 1/3 grog. I add silica 10%. I just made some tiles with paper clay
and they didn't warp. I dried them over the woodstove overnight. I made
one 1/8" thick just as a test and it was fine. It did shrink more than my
original formula 14 vs 10%. I haven't tried glazing them yet - since I
single fire, I will be expecting something. I have also fired tiles with
the grog at 5% and the clays evenly brought up to compensate for the
missing weight. The fireclay seems to act like grog in keeping the body
open enough to dry flat. I use fine grog. The high ball clays that I tried
years ago were the worst.

Do you have any idea of the water absorption rate with the paper clay? I would
be very interested in this.

Thank You,

Terrie

Use a clay with a high sand/grog content,or add it yourself say 30-50%
and dry the resulting tiles on a highly absorbant surface.
