recently I have been bisque firing a low-fire red to ^03. I bisque slow ,
200^ an hour. cups and small bowls do not warp.but all of my low platters,
large plates, ( anything with a wide rim,) etc seem to be warping so badly
that the rims almost slump to the kiln shelf. I'm using a commercial red clay
" stan's red " from Highwater. Its always been great. Any suggestions?
Thanks Laurie

Laurie,

Well, if it has not happened before, then: something wrong with
this batch of clay, or something wrong with your kiln or cones.
Sure sounds like it is getting too hot.

Our customers have had this also. It is easy to assume that because low
fire
ware looks non-vitreous that it is very stable in the kiln and that very
overhung and extreme shapes are fine. However this is not so. Often a
modification of the shape to one that is inherently more stable is all
that is needed. These red bodies are volatile and do not have a linear
maturation. They fail quickly over a narrow temperature range and cone
03-02
may be approaching that range for this body.
