I will be visiting the US from December 13th-21st 1996 and England, Ireland
and Scotland from Christmas 96-22nd January 97. I would love to visit as
many universities, studios, ceramic supply stores, ceramic book shops and
clayart members as possible during my very short stay.

I am currently enrolled as a postgrad student at the University of
Wollongong in NSW (Australia) where my area of research is thermal
expansion of glass and clay. I also do some casual tutoring in the
ceramics department which is part of the Faculty of Creative Arts and so
would be interested in visiting ceramic departments in universities and
colleges. My timing is terrible I know!!

Unfortunately my visit to the US will be confined mainly to the West coast.
My aim is to visit the Bullseye Glass Factory in Oregon and perhaps visit
Boulder Colorado (where my son is completing his 12 months of study
abroard) before flying back to LA where my son and I will fly on to London.

We will have Christmas with the Hewitt clan in London and then travel by
car around Scotland and Ireland.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks

Greetings from Seattle

In June, I returned from three months working at the University of Ulster
at Belfast. If you tour up to Northern Ireland/the North of Ireland
(language which covers both communities) you would want to stop and check
out the ceramics facility and meet the faculty and students. Peter
Meanley, who specializes in salt-glazed tea-pots is the Senior Lecturer.
Of hand,
I can't say whether they will be in session at the time you're visiting.
Clay people abound in both N.Ireland and the Irish Republic. There is a
training school for potters at Kilkenny/Thomastown, called the Thomastown
Pottery Skills Course (Gus is the contact person) A B&B there is called
The Tower. At Bennettbridge, County Kilkenny is the Nicolas Mosse Pottery
(closer to factory), probably the most well know maker of functional ware
North or South. He employs "stamp printing" to his ware. You might wish to
write the Crafts Council of Ireland, Powerscourt Townhouse Center, Dublin
2, Irish Republic. This should give you a good start.

Cheers!

Lurking mode off!

If you make it over to the East Coast, at any time the Smithsonian in
Washington would be worth a look.
The is a supply store just a few miles south in Alex VA and a nice art
center a bit North in Laurel MD.

Sorry I don't know the west at all.
