Hi again Clayarters!

workshop Aug 4th thru 8th, Vince has agreed to offer a second session the
following week. Dates for the second session are Aug. 11th thru 15th. Those
who have been kind enough to post announcements may be willing to update

Thanks................Michael McDowell

Vince Pitelka's Ancient Clay Workshop to be offered in Northwest
Washington.

Michael McDowell will be hosting an offering of Vince Pitelka's "Ancient
Clay" workshop at his home and studio ten miles north of Bellingham, WA.
This is a five day workshop in which participants will "learn by doing" the
tribal, pre-glaze, pre-kiln, techniques of forming, decorating and firing
their pots.

Vince Pitelka is head of the clay program at Tennessee Technological
University's Appalachian Center for Crafts, and has been teaching variations
of his ancient clay workshops for twelve years.

Dates of the workshop will be August 4th through August 8th, 1997. These
dates have been chosen to coincide with the cooling period of the Tozan
kiln in Nanaimo, B.C.. Those wishing to participate in both the firing of
the Tozan kiln and Vince's workshop will be able to do so without any
scheduling conflict. Due to strong early response, a second workshop has
been scheduled for the following week, August 11th through August 15th.

Workshop size will be limited to a maximum of sixteen. $200 (US) fee
includes workshop attendance, tools, polychrome slips & terra sig. Clay
custom blended to Vince's exacting standards will be available for
purchase.

Those wishing to keep lodging & meals expense to a minimum are invited to
pitch tents on Michael's lawn, and join in the cooperative creation of
group meals. A large organic garden on site will provide a good start
toward our needs. For those wishing slightly less primitive lodging, there
is a Bed & Breakfast right next door, and the owner has been alerted to be
ready to field requests for room sharing, space on the porch with shower
privileges, etc. (Phone Slater House Bed & Breakfast (800) 815-4273). There
is also a "Super 8 Motel" just about 3/4 of a mile from the site, phone
(360) 384-8881, or toll free reservations at (800) 800-8000 (ask for Super
8 Motel - Ferndale, WA).

Those wishing to reserve a place at this workshop should send a $50
non-refundable deposit to Michael McDowell at P.O. Box 4125, Bellingham, WA
98227, along with your deposit, please indicate which dates you wish to
attend, whether you intend to pitch a tent and/or participate in group
meals. All deposits will be refunded if the workshop is cancelled for any
reason. For further information about the workshop contents, contact Vince
Pitelka during business hours at The Appalachin Center for Crafts (central
time zone) at (615) 597-6801. For information regarding the workshop site,
