val cushing's handbook

updated sat 22 oct 05

George McEvoy on tue 17 sep 96

This is not a sales pitch nor do I reap any financial benefits, but i did
want to alert one and all to "Cushing's Handbook"
(third edition) by Val Cushing of Alfred. A friend of mine put me on to it
recently and i got a copy ... full of invaluable info
about glazes, firing, pots, etc. -- seems also to be in readable,
understandable "english"
It is only $24 which includes shipping and can be ordered from him at fax #
607-587-9036 or phone 607-871-2111 in Alfred, Ny

I've been the proud owner of Val Cushing's great orange handbook since
early last year. It is a compendium of information from his classes at
Alfred, and a wealth of information about clays, glazes, slips, terra
sig, glaze calculation, etc. etc. Not to mention glaze recipes for all
temperatures and atmospheres - tested, with notes attached, and a
bibligraphy.

In addition to my hearty recommendation - consider that clay-arter Karen
Gringhuis was instrumental in producing the handbook!

To get your own copy of "Cushing's Handbook", send $24 ($22 for the
book, $2 for postage) (plus sales tax if you are a New York resident)
to:

Cushing
1497 Water Wells Rd
Alfred Station, NY 14805

I've just checked with the Cushings, and received permission to post
this information.

Sarah House showed me her copy. I love the hand drawn examples of good
and bad lids, gallerys, etc. Sculls and crossbones and lightning bolts
really get the idea across. ;-)

"I heard that Val Cushing has handbook for potters. Can anyone give me =
a
brief revue of its contents? And how do I order it?"
-----------------------------------------------------------
It would be nigh on to impossible to give
a "brief revue of its contents." This is
Cushing's own notes, lectures, records,
ruminations, ideas collected over many
years. It's as if you threw all such material
into a very large room for many years and
began pulling out items and scraps of
writings ...... which then triggered other
thoughts that you perhaps hadn't written
down ..... and put them into a "handbook"
in somewhat of an organized fashion. Many of the pages
are in his own handwriting.

Contents include just about every aspect
of clay ..... including "what to do next"
when you're stuck for inspiration. Lots
of glaze and slip recipes with notes.
Tools for a studio. Clays. Whatever. Outstanding
for content ...... its glance into a lifetime
of generosity in potting and teaching ... as well as
originality of approach to disseminating
subject matter.

I cart my
copy from studio to house ....... all over
the house .... to browse,
appreciate and use Cushing's offerings
to my own advantage.

In the Mojave where the wind doth
howl and moan trying to coax its way
into the house, out of the cold .... like
many of us, it needs to clean up its
presentation if it chooses to influence
its way into our minds and hearts.....
my door will stay closed...... not going
to reap any whirlwinds THIS morning.....

The Handbook is NOT available in any store that I know of. You have to write to Val directly and ask for a copy. Unfortunately, I do not have the address with me at work, right now, but I think it's available in the archives.

Search the Clayart archives for "Alfred Station" and "Val Cushing." That combination should bring up references to his address.

And, get your copy soon. It's well worth it. The Handbook is what I consider to be a "hardcopy" of Val's brains. His experiences and knowledge gathered over 40 years of teaching and making pots are written in the pages of his Handbook.

It's a gem for your library.

Rick,

Is Val Cushing's book still available for purchase? If so, I would encourage you to pick up a copy. A glaze recipe is only that. When you read about the glazes, how they are applied, etc, etc, which the author usually discusses, you are not only educating yourself about yet again another method, but reducing your testing and costs with the meager investment of a good book. You are also in a small way supporting the collective perpetuation of the tradition and author who has/had worked very hard to assemble their, in many cases, life's work. Even better, why not a workshop with Val? I hear his opening address at the Pottery festival in Mpls was outstanding.

i checked john anthony's website and it was great to see all those glaze tests
results. but as i don't have val cushings's book could he post the glae formulas
for DK11 white satin liner, VC72, VC71 and VC 62. with that info in hand, some
of us might want to try these glazes and compare results with his pictures.
