Clayarters:

I'm heading down to Greune, Texas this weekend for the Texas Clay
Festival. I went last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great pottery, food,
music, and camping.

The festival is organized by Dee Buck (Buck Pottery) and Frank Cambell
(Dos Rios Pottery) resident potters in Greune. I believe this is the fifth
year the festival has been held.

If any of you are in the Austin and San Antonio area I encourage you to
attend. For more information call (210) 629-7975 or (210) 620-4219.

I haven't seen information on this event so I thought I'd post it.

The 6th annual Texas Clay Festival -- October 25 and 26
In Gruene, (pronounced "green"), Texas near New Braunfels (about 30 miles
northeast of San Antonio and 40 miles SW of Austin)

Pottery of all types, demos, food and fun in an old Texas town in the Hill
country (home of Texas' oldest dance hall).

Best you be there.

The Sixth Annual Texas Clay Festival is this weekend, October 24th
and 25th in Gruene (New Braunfels) Texas.

This is an art festival with 2 important differences:
1-- All the art is made from clay, and
2 -- all of the exhibitors also demonstrate, with 3 demonstrations
going on at all times.

For directions, a list of exhibiting artists, and details, see the festival
web site at:
http://www.nbtx.com/texasclayfestival/

I'll be there, so stop by and introduce yourself as a "Clayarter".

Several people asked if the festival is still "on" after the
flooding in the New Braunfels area.

Yes, it will happen.
Dee Buck reports that the town is a "disaster area" and several
of their neighbors lost their homes, but they are OK.
He advises that anyone who has hotel/motel reservations for
the weekend should call and check on them.

I visited my friends at the Texas Clay Festival in Gruene Texas on =
Saturday. The weather couldn't have been better and the buying crowd was =
huge. There was hourly demos, wheel work and Raku firings. Kids clay =
area.
Randy Brodnax and Billy Ray Mangham had the crowds attention pulling =
Raku pots, applying horsehair, creating lots of smoke and fire. Dee and =
Terry Buck have expanded their showroom in Buck Pottery. Their =
wood-fired pots were really nice! Some of the other 40 plus exhibitors =
were Don Herron, Gary and Daphne Hatcher, Ron Boling, Gary Huntoon Mark =
Epstein, Vorakit Chinnookoswong.
I spent a few minutes visiting with David "Junkyard Dawg" Hendley =
admiring his clay screw on tops and stoppers on his jugs and jars. I saw =
where he brought a nearly full keg left over from his birthday gig. Too =
early in the morning for me to get started.
So everyone was having a great time. I purchased a really nice carved =
porcelain celadon teapot from Frank Campbell and Barbara Buell that =
operate Dos Rios Pottery in Gruene. My collection grows each visit.=20
Gruene is such a nice place to visit anytime but the Festival is a =
"must" every year.
Adios,
Dale Tex

Hey all!

Great festival in Gruene, TX this weekend. Finally met David Hendley in =
person and am drinking from one of his mugs as I write this email. I, of =
course, was too closed mouthed to say much to anyone, but I really =
enjoyed seeing the great variety of quality Texas pots. I sure wish I =
would have been able to see more demonstrations, but I learned a ton =
just by watching the three potters that I did. I don't get out much, so =
throwing examples are priceless.

I think my wife is hooked on raku now, so thanks Randy Brodnax and Billy =
Ray Mangham. Now I will have to fight my wife for use of the wheel once =
I get it built.

On the trip back up to Waco, my wife and I were talking. She asked me =
what I had liked the most. I said, "Everything." I asked her what she =
liked the most. "The David Hendley show," she said.

BTB, I have three David Hendley "O.J" cards I'm willing to trade. I =
need most everything else. Almost had a bowl card today, but I went =
soft and gave it to a nice young lady instead of keepin' it for my =
collection. =20

3 "O.J.s"--Good condition in poly sleeves. Please no dealers or =
bookstore retailers.

Taylor, in Waco a bit sadder now that the show has ended :(

I want to second Taylor's observations of the Texas Clay Festival. That is
one great event for anyone interested in clay. This is my third year to
attend and I believe this is the best yet. That might be because I spent a
lot more time there this year. I'm sure that those potters got tired of
seeing me in and around their booths.

I, like Taylor, was too close mouthed or shy and didn't take the opportunity
to meet the people I should have. I did have the pleasure of visiting with
Randy Brodnax and Ron Boling. Randy, as always, did a wonderful job of
demonstrating and entertaining the crowd while firing Raku.

There were three throwing demonstrations going on most all the time during
the two day event. I watched several but only got in on the very end of
David Hendley's. David does a great job. I'm sorry I missed most of his
show. He had a crowd around him bigger than any I saw at the other demos.
One demo I did get to see all of was by Phil May from Waters Edge Pottery.
He did a great job and gave out some interesting and valuable tips that will
save me time in the studio.

It was also interesting and encouraging to see all the people enjoying and
buying pots. I think there were about 35 potters in the show and I'd bet
all of them had a very good weekend in terms of sales.

To any of you that may have had a hand in putting that event on, I want to
express my thanks. I think it was a very well done and successful show.
Because of all the wet weather the set up was a little different from what
I've seen before, but I believe the arrangement was better this year than it
has been the last two.

Thanks again.

Does anyone know if the schedule is out for this year's Clay Festival in
Gruene? It seems the website isn't working, but maybe they're just updating it.

Hey Vicki:

Hope to see you there. We can chat it up while we watch Hendley throw
kiddy pools. Or Carl Block make face jugs. Or Jim Dale throw FAST and
well.

David's stuff is a must buy. Bring lots of money. You better get there
early if you want any of Carl's pots. If this year is anything like last
year, he will be sold out the first day. David will have packed his
plastic trailer full of good pots, none of that brown crap.

I think this year I will be spending my allowance on a D. Buck pot, but
what to buy? I need a job.

I'll be the one wearing a Dr Pepper t-shirt covering a Pepper gut--wine is
too expensive.

I can feel it! In the air and in my bones. Good vibes for this year's
Festival! When the Autumn weather will be as nice as it has been lately the
pottery savvy crowds will be huge. And when my feet ache from loading,
firing and unloading my kiln this past week I know it will be worth every
little pain. I've got a good selection of Shino-glazed ware, elf carved
lanterns and lidded jars. Blue Velvet is nearly loaded ready to go with
boxes of pots.
Each year this family of potters gather at the center of the Texas clay
universe, Festival weekend in Gruene. Sharing stories, laughter with multi
talented and creative David Hendley, bodacious Randy Brodnax, Carl Block,
Jim Bob Salazar and the many other participants exhibiting their new ware.
Sometimes all the excitement brings a tear to my eye....but it's just smoke
from the Raku firings.
Happy Trails!

It just keeps getting better!
The 15th annual Texas Clay Festival was just wonderful - perfect
weather and enough customers to keep 50 potters grinning from
ear to ear.
It was great to meet some of you who introduced yourselves as
Clayarters. Sorry you didn't make it Marcia.
Has anyone posted pictures?

David,

Once again you potters did a great job displaying your ware and
putting on demonstrations. I can't help but learn something every time
I go to Gruene either by walking among the booths listening to the
potters talking to customers or sitting under one of the demo tents
watching people work.

Saturday was so crowded, I had to leave early. Just too many eager
clayophiles jostling for pots or bending the ears of their favorite
potters. Sunday was a bit better for the nerves but wow still a crowd.
I'm glad my favorite potters in Texas were selling pots and making new
customers. I missed Jim Dales work this year, but here's hoping he
gets back to turning soon.

Must have been the excessive Dr Pepper or the break down in Cuerro,
David; I don't remember much and took almost no pictures. See you all
next year.

The Texas Clay Festival was a huge success! The town elders of Gruene,
which is a which is a wildly popular tourist town, were saying that they
did think they had ever seen a bigger crowd than last Saturday.
I sold an amazing number of pots and met many many interesting people.
Thanks to all for coming and making it so great.
