terracotta question

Hi, Clayarters - As someone who has worked almost exclusively in stoneware
clays, I find myself fascinated with a terracotta body lately. Can anyone
tell me how the effect I see in shows and commercial pieces which looks like
the piece has been antiqued with white (matt)is done? I have looked through
all books I can find and seen nothing on the subject and have tried a couple
of slip recipes I have but the effect does not come out the same. Thank you
for any help you can provide. I am relatively new to Clayart and am really
enjoying the collective knowledge as well as the banter!!! TIA

Hi Betsy: I am not sure what the antique finish you are talking about.
I have been doing a lot of work in Terra Sigillata. These "slips" are
mixed with a lot of water and allowed to settle. This sorts out the clay
particle sizes and you can get a very fine grained slip. I burnish the
pots with the slips and get a very waxy glaze like surface. I mix Mason
stains with the terra sigillata and get lots of colors. Does this sound
like what you are looking for?
