terra cotta planters in winter

Linda,

I have a number of terra cotta pots (purchased) which have set outside all
winter here in Custer, SD. We've had some truly astounding highs and lows
this year. Most of the pots were okay, but one, which I assume had moisture
in the walls, had a blowout of part of the outside wall--like you might see
during firing with air in the wall. Unless you seal the surface so that
water can't enter the clay, I don't know how you could possibly prevent
this sort of thing from happening. And, of course, sealing the surface kind
of defeats the purpose of using terra cotta, doesn't it? Still, as I said,
most of the planters were fine, and maybe you just want to take your
chances.
