Someone with chemistry savvy should be able to suggest a solvent to pour
into the piece to dissolve at least enough of the styrofoam so you can
get the remainder of it out without having to burn it.

Simple acetone will remove the styrofoam pieces embedded in the clay. Using
a acetone based nail polish remover should work. The styrofoam will get
slimey and should be able to be absorbed onto a cotton applicator stick or a
rag. As the acetone dries the styrofoam will again harden into a solid so
don't get it on anything you wish to keep.
