Late last year there was a wonderful thread listing poems which
referenced clay in some way or other: sculpting, potting, looking at
pots, etc. Now I'm wonderin', do any of you very worldly ClayArters
know of any songs which mention clay? Since I'm not set up for audio yet,
please do some old fashioned typing. Thanks.

I recently had the pleasure of hearing a tape titled "Fashioned in the
Clay" by Gordon Bok, Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett, this tape is
available from Folk-Legacy Records in Sharon, Connecticut 06069. Their
phone number is 860-364-5661. The song "Fashioned in the Clay" is also
available on one of their CD's.
Happy listening!

I thought I sent a post about this, but I can't find any indication that it
went out. Please forgive the duplication if there is any.

I only have song shards to offer.

There is a hymn from which I can only recall a few lines:
"Have thine own way, Lord, have thine own way.
Thou art the potter, I am the clay....
...mold me and make me, like Thee sublime...."

A church-going neighbor can provide the additional lyrics if you do not
already
have this one. The names "Stebbins" and "Pollard" figure in the written-by
or arranged-by data. When I attended a Methodist church eons ago, the tune
was played when people were invited to walk up to the altar to be saved or
something - maybe it was communion. It is a rather plaintive melody, as I
recall.

Garth Brooks did a song "Alabama Clay" on the "Garth Brooks" album.
The chorus begins:
"His neck was red as Alabama Clay..."
It is the story of a young man who runs away from the farm for the big city,
finds
that he misses wide open spaces and dirt on his hands, discovers a young
back home has his baby, and he returns to the farm.
I can provide the lyrics, entire, unless you just want to rush out and buy
the disk for your very own. It was, by the way, his best album, imo, kind of
raw and twangy.

Then there is another song from the '50's or '60's "With just a hundred
pounds of clay, He created a woman and a whole lot of lovin' - for a man
(whoa-oh!)"
I am trying to find the tape, but maybe an oldies station in your area could
give
you a title or artist.

their music search, there is a great song called THE POTTERS WHEEL

This is one thread I could not resist. The GREATEST song I have heard
regarding clay is "The Potter's Wheel" by Freyda & Acoustic AttaTude
(not misspelled). The title of the CD is "Midnight at Cabell Hall".
It is produced by Red House Records Inc. PO Box 4044, St. Paul,
MN 55504. They give a number inside the jacket for more info:
800-659-4687. A small sample of the chorus:

Take a little clay,
Put it on the wheel.
Get a little hint
How God must feel.
Give a little turn,
Listen to it spin.
Make it any shape
You want it in..........

I do not have any connection to this band, I just love music. The rest of the
CD is also good, so it is certainly not a waste to buy.

Enjoy. Where spring is coming so slowly to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mtns.

There's a great song by echo and the bunnymen about clay on their
porcupine album

Hi All,

My wife extracted the posts on Songs About Clay for me. The Potter's
Wheel is truly a wonderful song. I know of one other - Fashioned In The
Clay by Elmer Beal. You can find it in Rise Up Singing (the
indispensible songbook from Sing Out). In part (from memory)

Look now to the potter whose wheel is spinning 'round.
Making with her hands the past and future from the ground.
Cups that will be filled and drunk so warm in Wintertime.
Plates and bowls for dinner, served by candlelight with wine.

CHORUS
And she believes, she believes
By her work it's so easy to see
That the future is more than the following day
It's fashioned securely in the clay.

Other verses are about farmers raising crops, couples raising children
etc. Gordon Bok recorded it, but I've never heard it...so I made up a
tune of my own from the chords in the book. I played this and Potter's
Wheel at an exhibition opening last year, and handed the words to the
chorus out to all the potters present. It suonded WONDERFUL, especially
Potter's Wheel, which has a chant-like chorus. (Would be happy to
digitize a portion of either song and put them on the Web if people are
interested in hearing what they sound like.....)

Thanks for allowing a non-potter to post! Lori gets control of the
mailbox again.....

I haven't seen this one mentioned yet, perhaps because it's not
*exactly* about clay...but it sounds like it ought to be. There's
a Christian band called Jars of Clay that got some play on rock
stations last year. They have a song called "Flood".
The best line is:

"Slowly I become one with the mud..."

It's perfect.

A couple of years ago when visiting the Potteries in northern
England (Stoke-on-Trent area), I toured the Gladstone Pottery. It's a
refurbished replica of a Victorian-era production pottery --not at all
on the scale of Disneyland, so don't get your hopes up for rides or other
amusements--which had a quaint, dusty gift shop. I
purchased a souvenir cassette recording called "Balls of Clay" by Ed Lane
a former pottery worker and self-styled minstrel for the cause. Among the
--ahem--hits were: Saggarmaker's Bottomknocker (almost rap-like in its
evocation) and the title song, Balls of Clay. 'Twas a steal at five pounds
sterling. Unfortunately for all you clay-song collectors I've no other
info regarding the homemade recording. Guess you'll just have to go to
Gladstone yourselves.
