Hi all: Robin Hopper in one of his very fine tapes recommends Darvan 7 , afew
drops in your water. It's slick, it works and I love it.

This may work in some instances, but I would be wary of it. Darvan is a
strong deflocculant, and if you get very much of it in plastic clay,
it(the clay) will become thixotropic (rubbery) and will not want to stand.
It may not be a problem with new clay, but with the clay that you mix (or
re-cycle) that contains Darvan from throwing slop.

Clays that contain a lot of free Ca and Mg ions (such as some stonewares)
will not be effected as much as cleaner clays such as porcelain.

The cellulose gums mentioned in a previous post can also have unexpected
side effects. Some, such as CMC, can also have a deflocculatory effect.
In addition, they cannot be used with a clay that contains Vee Gum T as a
plasticiser, as the combination of cmc (or other cellulose gums) and
Vee Gum destroys plasticity. I know this sound strange, since there is a
product marketed (Vee Gum Cer) that is a combination of the two. I can
only assume that it is intended for glazes only.

The one other potential problem is that cellulose gums spoil in the clay,
and with time will develope an amazingly pungent odor, not unlike vomit. You
will not be popular in group studios if your clay and/or slop smells that
way.

Not to be a spoilsport...

Hi Bill,
Great idea! I use "Darvan 7" and Viniger in my thick slips (for attaching) in
been told on more than one occasion that "Darvan was not intented for that purpo

Is there a reason why I should not use "Darvan 7" in this fashion? Anybody?

Cheers,

I'm sorry but I can resist no longer.

In a previous discussion about throwing porcelain someone suggested using KY
jelly!

Russel (actually, I'm not sorry ;-)
