skutt 1027 kiln info and help needed

I just purchased a Skutt 1027 used and was wondering if I can use it with
only two of the three rings? I am also in need of FAQ's or other help on
how to use the thing. I am throwing bowls and such along with some hand
building. Is there a good reference site for how to time the three heat
settings? I hear 3 hours low, 3 med, and then let it go untill the cone
lets it shut off. Any help, advise, etc is GREATLY appreciated.

We have been using a Skutt kiln (and wheel) for over 20 years and have
always found the people at Skutt to be more than helpful. I would
suggest contacting them with the ring question. They are located in
Portland Or. and the phone is 503-231-7726. They also have a web site
which includes a FAQ listing, along with other information. The URL is
http://www.skutt.com
As for firing schedule: We have found textbook or kiln manufacturer's
recommendations to be good starting points. From there it varies
according to clay body, form and glaze you are using. Time and
experimentation teach what is best for each situation.

I have a Scutt 1027 which I fire at 1 hr low, 1 medium and then turn it up
till done. Ileave the peep holes closed throughout. I also have a Orton
Kilnvent drawing air through the kiln.

Sam, I, too, have a Skutt 1027. Yes, it can be fired with just two rings.
I have done this when I just had a small load to fire. Your firing
schedule can vary with your glazes. With really matte glazes and with
glazes where I wish to encourage flow, I will set the kiln on low for 2-3
hours, then on med. for 2-3 hours, then set it to high. However, I have
done a "fast fire" when I set the kiln on low for 1 hour, med. for 1 hour,
then set it on high. Some of the bright, shiny glazes without much flow
work well with this schedule. Also, I use a lot of high-iron content flux
saturation glazes that would run unbearably on a slow schedule, so the fast
fire works for those types of glazes. You might try turning the switches
back to medium when the kiln reaches temperature and leave on medium for a
30min. to 1 hour soak. You can get some very interesting results from
doing this.

What happened to the old rules about not turning the kiln up to high until
dull red heat and leaving the peeps open until turning to high? I'm firing a
MUCH longer firing cycle in my 1027 than most replying to this post. Am I
just wasting my money? I'm getting some really great glaze results and have
thought that was from the long firing cycles. Maybe not so?

Not to talk yopu into more money but get a computer controller for it.
Paragon TNF can be had as an addon. You plug the kiln into it and the
computer into the wall. Then write and I will tell you secrets.
