Indianapolis Art Center on mon 21 jul 97

Good Morning, all.

The reason I am writing is that one of our advanced students here at the
Indianapolis Art Center is moving to San Francisco in about two weeks. He is
looking for a place similar to the IAC. We have two clay studios (as well
as eleven other classrooms) and 4 electric kilns, one high-fire gas kiln, a
pit fire and raku kiln. (Please forgive me if I say these things wrong- Clay
is not my medium.) Anyhow, he does slab and coil sculptures that are raku
fired.

So, is there a facility in San Francisco? Please let me know.

Thanks

A place to start is the Roby O'Burke Studio, 552-A Noe St. in the
Castro district in SF. Call (415) 558-9819. Another contact is the
Friends of the Sharon Art Studio Association, (415) 925-1930. Either
of these may be able to provide contacts if not studio space. Let me
know how it works out.

There are a number of cooperative studios in SF: Ruby's Clay Studio on Noe
and 19th St and Julian St Studios, though I don't know where that is
located. There's also a cooperative studio in San Rafael on Front St (I
think). The Palo Alto Cultural Center and Walnut Creek Cultural Center are
also options and they have nice facilities as well. Your student could call
Ceramics and Crafts Supply in SF or Leslie's Ceramics in Berkeley to see if
they have any other info. There is one other possible option: Sign up for
classes at San Francisco St., San Jose St., Hayward St., SF City College,
well you get the idea. The cost of taking classes may compare favorably
with studio space costs, depending on facilities, location and how well one
gets along w/ instructors.

hi Stephanie,

The Clay Studio on Julian Street moved about 2 1/2 years ago to 743
Harrison Street between 3rd and 4th Street in San Franciso. About 3
blocks from Moscone Center and the SF Modern Art Museum.

There are 30 stalls approximately 10 x 10 within the entire studio place
plus. I don't know about the availability at this moment but contact
John DeLois at 415-777-9080. There is a gallery space for installation
art and large scale paintings under "Space 743", a classroom space for
the on-going clay classes.

There ar 3 electric kilns, one gas raku kiln and one updraft gas kiln
that is normally fired at cone 8 for the classes. These kilns are
available for rental by the studio space holders in addition to the
monthly rent.

regards,
