sagger fire (mothballs?)

updated tue 30 apr 96

I have a friend that is coming over Wednesday night to do
some raku firing. He heard from one of his professors
that doing a pseudo Sagger fire with Mothballs creates
some intresting effects.

Has anyone heard of using mothballs in a sagger fire?
What temp should I fire to and are there any safety risks
I should be aware of?

Thanks much,

JB

>Yes, the fumes from the mothballs. Napthelene is not a health food.

At one time, not too long ago, mothballs consisted of naphthalene, a pure
hydrocarbon, and they were used by potters as reducing agent to be
introduced into the kiln as the firing progressed (or placed in a
sagger). Sadly, the naphthalene mothballs have been largely replaced by
ones made of dichlorobenzene (usually the "para" isomer). If the sagger
can be well sealed perhaps the release of chlorine and hydrochloride
gases would be sifficiently slow as to be easily vented from the kiln to
the outside. Otherwise they are very harmful and very toxic compunds
best to be avoided. Tom.Buck Hamilton Ontario Canada

I have heard of mothballs being thrown into the peephole of an
electric kiln to get reduction. Works effectively but not too good
for the elements. ;) Lotsa smoke and stink, too.
Not familiar with the effects using a saggar, though. :(
