Thanks for all your suggestions!

I did take one beautifully thrown bowl (ahem) and lined it with gold leaf.
(Been wanting a good excuse to use that.) It turned out quite nice, IMHO.

I am opting for experimentation and will try each remedy and report back on
the results.
