Lisa and others,

Be very careful about putting metal objects such as coins
in a kiln. Pennies are the worst, they contain zinc. Before
1982 they contained 25% zinc and after 1982 they are copper
plated pure zinc. Zinc boils at 907 deg. C (1665 F) releasing
zinc vapors which are very toxic. The zinc also reacts with
oxygen in the air to form a white powder (zinc oxide). This is
also toxic if inhaled. Brass metal casters used to get the
"zinc tremors" from inhaling zinc oxide. Supposedly
drinking milk would cure this but why take chances.

Stones and other objects can spall and explode (from
internal moisture) and generally colored stones will
be ruined. It is far better to leave a space in the clay (allow
for shrinkage) and epoxy the objects in after final firing.
