Hi all.
Has anyone ever heard of a Randall Kickwheel? I've never heard of this
brand and cannot find any info on it. I have an opportunity to buy one
with a motor for $500 (Said to be list at $1000?)..... what do you think???

Thanks!
Rachel

Randall is my favorite of the motorized kickwheels. The new price of
them is a bit high for my blood however.

I think =24500 is a bit high for a used wheel but if the bearings don't
rumble, the wheel head comes off and it has a splash pan, how could
you go wrong?

I would be sure to sit at the wheel and atleast kick it up and imagine
throwing. Is the seat close enough? This can be adjusted. But if you
are small, the distance from the wheel head to the flywheel might be a
bit too much. This is hard to adjust.

Rachel,
Randall makes a great kickwheel. The seat is like one from an old
tractor, and it goes up/down, in/out, and swivels left/right. More
comfortable than you would think. They don't have any sort of
built in table, so you get to make your own the way you like. It's
easy with some 2x4s and good plywood. The splash pan holds
gallons of slop or loads of trimmings which is nice. Most of them
have a 'bucket head' which requires a special plaster bat which
you can pour yourself, if you get the molds. Randall carries them,
as does, I think, Steve Jepson in FLA. You can buy or make a regular
flat head, but the plaster is nice for plates, and if you coil up big
pots or throw in sections, it's great to just drop the bat in place
without worrying about pins and such.
Buy that wheel!

Rachel,
If the wheel is in good condition, then it's a good price. And, a good
wheel. One of the mainstays in kickwheels, not too hi-tech and very
reliable. Go for it, IMHO!!!

Hi Rachel,

If you have the opportunity to buy a motorized Randall Wheel for
$500.00 grab it ! I've had a Randall for 37 years and it has never
given me any trouble. Have replaced the rubber drive wheel once
and rewound the motor once. I also have a Brent and a Shimpo
but do the bulk of my throwing on the Randall which has never
given my back any trouble. The Randall wheel Co used to be located
in Alfred, N.Y. but I see by their latest advertisement that they have
moved to 505 University Av, Apt 39, Rochester, NY 14607.

Good luck, Debby Grant in NH

I am also looking into buying a new wheel and have my eye on Creative
Industry. I visited their website and they even called me twice at home. I
was very impressed with that. They have a new wheel out called the "Clay
Boss" which is made for hobby potterist just starting out and it is only
$500, is a good deal or a gimmic? Thanks

Whaaaahhhhh! i wanna Randall Wheel!!!!

Seriously, I am and have been in the market for a used Randall, with or
without motor. I can even replace bearings if need be. If anyone in the deep
south can help, please post me....I'll drive anywhere within 6 or 7 hours to
get it...farther if i can pitch a tent nearby & spend the night.

The "Clay Boss" looks pretty good to me.
I can only say "looks" because I haven't used it.
It looks durable, welded steed, well crafted.
The motor is very small, which is fine if you don't want to make big things.
10 lbs. of stiff clay would probably be the limit.
Just think ahead.
You may make only small things now, but what about 2 years from now?
As long as I'm here I'll put in a vote for my Pacifica GT800 that I've had
for 20 years.
I think it is quieter and smoother than a Brent C.
Called twice at home?
Do they also sell insurance?
Long distance phone service?
Light bulbs?
Get a wheel and start throwin'!

Figred,
I am ordering a Clay Boss from a company called Lark Books. The price they
gave me was $360 + S&H(about 8.00). If you want to check them out the web
address is
http://www.larkbooks.com/ for a catalog or just call customer service at
1-800-284-3388. I already have a lockerbie, but need a smaller wheel to drag
around to my afterschool art classes and demonstrations. It should be here
about anytime. I am hoping it works well. I'll drop a line when I test it
out.

I was shocked too that the Creative Industries guy kept calling. He called
one time and I wasn't home so I called back and I said hi this is blah blah
and he says oh yeah, you are the one inquiring about a wheel, yadda yadda
yadda, but I mean for someone to know you by name that you have only emailed?
That's either strange or dedication, or a strange dedication? I don't know.
I'm still looking.
Thanks

Amanda,
I bought Creative Industries' Clay Boss in July of '96 from a local ceramic
supply business and paid $480, with tax it came to $540.35. I wanted to buy
a more expensive wheel, but at the time wasn't sure i would stick with
throwing for certain--now i am certain i will always be making pots. I
really like the Clay Boss wheel, the only less than perfect characteristics i
have found to be are its humming sound, but i have gotten so i don't notice
it anymore; and the splash pan does indeed make a splash as it doesn't
entirely circle round the wheel. I had a problem with the motor (which i
believe was a fluke)--it completely stopped working--my husband took off the
motor and sent it to the company in California. Clay Industries returned a
new motor to me within the week with a very nice letter, and the check i had
sent to cover shipping costs. One thing for you to know--If you like to
throw more than 15 pounds of clay this wheel is designed to handle only 15
pounds or less. Inspite of the negatives i like the Clay Boss and the
company is great to do business with as you have discovered.

Best wishes, Lynn
