pure & simple plaster bats and molds

I'm a hobby potter, making things for myself and friends; I don't think I'll
ever be more than that. For that reason I think that anything I can do to
make things easier on myself is OK. I recently ordered a couple of the Pure
& Simple molds, one for plates and one for bowls, and I'm curious if anyone
out there has used them. Are there any particular tricks or traps I need to
know?

I appreciate any information anyone out there might have.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Bim,

I've used these bat molds for almost 10 years now and they are great! Super
time-savers for me as a production potter. Would recommend them to anyone.
Tip: spray the plastic molds with Armour-All before pouring the plaster.
They release like a charm. Another thing...make sure the mold is level
before pouring.

Dan, I use the bat molds also....The first time I used them, I used regular
plaster of paris and everything came our fine, except that, after three
years, they have all cracked in half, mainly from my abuse with large amounts
of clay....

I talking several years ago with a mold maker, he told me to use
hydrocal....so I bought 200 lbs of it and six new bat molds.....I didn't use
any mold release, although your Armor All suggestion looks very good to
me.......it seems to work for me to just turn them over and hammer on them
with my fist and they pop out in good shape....

problem is.....this time they have a white skin like layer over the bat and I
don't know where it came from or what to do with it...I have been trying to
scrubbie it off and, worse case, it will come off on a pot, which requires
mondo scrubbing before it can hit the kiln... do you know what happened?

Sue - it didn't stop raining for the Lilac Festival and the lilacs did not
come out....First weekend 40 degrees - rained all day Sat - 1.1 inches of
snow Sat night (those $150 Easy-Ups from Sam's Club folded like twisted
pretzels and all got to go home), and 40 degrees on Sunday. Last weekend,
however, our prayers were answered with overkill - 90 degrees and muggy -
unbearably muggy - GOD I love this town...
