I would like to build my own motorized (direct drive) pottery wheel. Do you
know where I can purchase suitable motors? Thanks.

Motors for wheels can be bought just about anywhere from Grangers to Sears,
etc. Even some used ones from appliance dealers/repair folks could work. My
suggestion, at least a 1/2HP or 3/4HP with a speed of 1725RPM. But all is
somewhat a matter of what type wheel you build. I assume that your going to
build one that drives off of the flywheel as opposed to a direct or belt
drive wheel with a variable speed pedal. Also, be careful which way the motor
turns, clockwise or counter clockwise as this obviously determines where and
how it is placed in the drive chain-of-events. Some motors have reversable
rotation options which is a matter of switching a wire or two. Usually this
is explained on the diagram at the wiring junction box right on the motor.
Hope this helps!

There has been a recent thread discussing the merit and faults of a
variety of pottery wheels. I have an opportunity to acquire a Scutt
electric wheel for a nominal amount from a retired potter. I didn't know
that Scutt made (I assume past tense) pottery wheels. Does anyone have
any experience with this wheel? Thanks for your assistance.

David,

I recently got rid of a Skutt wheel that I had had for some 30 years.
When I attempted to have it repaired, I was told that Skutt has not made
wheels for many years. In fact, no one at the Skutt plant knew about
the wheel.

Was it a good wheel? Well, it was quite a sturdy one. My only
complaint was that it did not have a good low speed. One could change a
little gear, but one would lose the higher speeds with the smaller gear.

Julie -

Canada is a big place. I live on Vancouver island and I am not about to go
to Halifax on the Atlantic coast to get a wheel.

It would be a good idea to tell everyone where you are located.

Gosh, even "Big Tony" from Sour Cherry wouldn't want to drive all the way to
Toronto. Then again, who would?

Check eBay...they often have wheels for sale. Just enter "potters wheel"
sort throught he listings for some ceramics made by someplace called
"potters wheel". Last time I looked there were several.

I am in the market for a pottery wheel. I guess I am leaning toward a Brent, maybe a
cxc because that is the one that most people I have spoken with have and like. Any
thoughts?

Also have a friend in desperate need of a Brent cxc motor, cheap if possible. He
spent way too much trying to fix his wheel and cost and problems snowballed. I hate
seeming him not potting!

thanks,

rachelle

I have a CXC. No problems with the wheel or motor. I had some problems with
the speed control. It is a little complicated, but there was a plastic piece
that was continually coming loose that was eventually repaired when they did
a manufactuing upgrade. I have had mine for 10 years an no other problems.
