I'm pleased to announce that I will be heading a pottery tour of Ecuador
for the Potters For Peace organization from May 18 - June 3, 1997.

This trip, which originates from Miami, FL, will include visits to
Quito, Cuenca, Banos and a village (Mondana) in the upper Amazon basin.
Potters' studios as well as small villages where pottery is produced will be
visited, as well as demonstrations by Quichua indian potters living in the
Amazon. Trips to various museums with extensive ceramic collections will
be scheduled in both Quito and Cuenca. In addition, a trip to the largest
Indian market in Ecuador located in Otavalo (outside Quito) is planned.

After several years of studying and traveling to Ecuador and the Amazon
basin, I am pleased to be part of the Potters For Peace offerings of
pottery tours. Ecuador, one of the smaller countries in South America,
offers us a unique variety of pottery from the highlands (Andes) to the
coastal range as well as the Amazon basin. I think any potter
interested in the ceramic work (both historical and contemporary) of
Ecuador and South America will find this tour most interesting.

Additional information about this trip can be found in the classified
section of CM (Feb./97). Also, anyone interested in learning more about
the Quichua pottery in the Amazon basin may want to look at an article
in CM (May/95) titled: Jatun Molino: A Pottery Village in the
Ecuadorian Amazon Basin, or a video (1996) by the same title (check libraries
or the Potters Shop). Potters from this village (Molino) will be doing
demonstrations for those on this pottery trip.

Anyone intersted should feel free to contact me for more information.

Thanks,

Joe
