Hi, I am going to the south of France next week and would like to visit
potters/potteries. We will be staying between Nice and Cannes at Juan
les Pins and will be driving around the area. If you know of any potters
/potteries in the area please let me know....and I promise to report on
my findings - honest!
Thanks...

Hi Carol,
Here is the address of a wonderful potters village in the area you will be
traveling. My folks were traveling and visited the village. I hope you'll
like it too.

Musee de la Poterie
Patrimoine des Potiers de Vallauris
M. Ribero
Rue Sicard F- 06220 Vallauris
tel (33) 93 64 66 51
fax (33) 93 64 93 46

I think the town is Vallauris. My folks said it is a town full of potters.
I hope this helps you. Enjoy!

Try to contact La Revue de la Ceramique et du verre 61 rue Marconi - BP3,
62880 Vendin-le -Vieil, France: phone: 21 79 44 44, fax: 21 79 44 45.
They publish "Guide des ceramistes" a listing of 700 ceramists
in France. Sylvie Girard is the editor.

Hi All: My wife, Linda Owen who is also a potter will be traveling in France
during the months of Feb and March 1997. She is interested in visiting
individual studio potters as well as larger facilities and pottery centers.
Could anyone help with some potters to contact in France (do any have
e-mail?), and places to go to see pottery and other types of claywork? If
possible, phone #'s would be very helpful as well. Any help would be
sincerely appreciated.
Thanks, Craig Martell-Oregon

My only clue is a community named LaBourne. If you can't find any info about it
Cambridge Wisc. because someone from LaBourne relocated to Lake Geneva WI
& that's very close to Cambridge, the home of the Pottery Olympics.
someone will know someone, etc. What a great trip. Karen Gringhuis

LaBourne is about 90 km south of Paris. A German Potter (Topferei Hering)
was featured (in a small article) in CM in 1991 and I took the time to look
him up when I visited Germany soon after. He had relocated (and taken his
five potter employees with him), to LaBourne, I didn't make it there but I
hear it's pretty neat.

Have fun, I'm jealous.

Greetings...

Are any of you working in France, or know of potters working in France?

Thanks ... Katheryn

Stephen Mills on wed 3 jun 98

Katheryn,

Approx. 40km NNW of Bourges in central France is the small town of
Henrichemont. To the west some 7+km is the village of la Borne (in old
French: "the Boundary"). La Borne is (in my opinion) to France what
Mashiko is to Japan. It is the centre of traditional Pottery,
woodfiring, salt glazing, you name it. Its history goes back hundreds of
years. The conservative citizens of Henrichemont apparently banished
the unruly, anarchic, maverick potters of their town to "the Boundary"
on the principle of "out of sight out of mind" many centuries ago, and
created an environment which suited these craftsmen to the ground. It
was close to the clay beds they were using, which produce an almost
black, highly plastic clay which is very high in mica, has enormous
green strength, and fires a wonderfully warm, toasty brown.
The last time I counted there were more than 36 potters from all over
the world, working in the town and surrounding area.
As you can tell it's my Mecca.
