dear clayarters and terry...
Not to understate the workshop in California *grin grin*....but when you
attend the workshop in pensacola you get to see all of peter's works about
the city.... and there is his brother, john, who is a major part of his
productions... and peter has all his tools...equipment...etc.... and you
get to do an actual installation...It has to be far superior although I
would encourage everyone to attend Peter's workshops regardless....and I
used to live in California so I know both places..

Additionally... Peter's book, Architectural Ceramics, is to be released in
September... I saw the advanced copy and it is fabulous...!!!..

Greetings all,

Last weekend I assisted at a workshop given by Peter King in Barb Kate's new
studio in Yelm, Washington. Can't believe we got over 25 people into her
studio after laying out an architectural arch for a doorway that took up
almost a fourth of her space and still felt roomy. What a great new facility.

Sunday was the best when everyone got working on the piece at the same time.
We moved so much clay, I think Barb said 1300 pounds, in such a short time
frame. Peter had a slide show, with questions and answers, every morning for
two hours and then after lunch each day we got in 5 hours of working time,
for a total a little over 10 hours. Can't believe that the piece was
basically done in that time.

Peter's wife Xinia was a powerhouse and kept things really moving. She
teaches ceramics at a college in Costa Rice (I think it is the U. of Costa
Rica). Peter tells stories of his previous projects, mistakes, solutions,
improvements to how he works or gets a project done and then just stories
about his travels and experiences and before you know it, the job is done.
What a satisfying weekend it was. Peter is not on Clayart, yet..., so I won't
thank him again. But I do want to thank Barb for having us there and putting
on such marvelous workshops in such a nice facility. Think I'm gonna register
for the Lana Wilson workshop coming up in a couple of months.

Now I have to get busy and make some pots, gotta use all the new techniques
and ideas rolling around in my head.

p.s. If there is anyone in the Seattle area who would like to do a
collaborative architectural piece contact me..........I just bought a used
40" Bailey electric slab roller and am hot to do some pieces - the part I
especially liked about Peter's workshop was having 8 people work on a piece
at once. Very energizing!

I took the Peter King Workshop in Pensacola in July and it was FABULOUS.
The most incredible workshop I have ever taken. During the week we worked
on a fireplace and an 8x10' bathroom wall - palm tree motif with a huge
sink attached to the wall. Peter lays out a 1" thick slab the size of the
wall to be installed plus 10% for shrinkage and works on it like a mural.
At first you feel like I couldn't possibly do this but after a day you're
right there working along side of him. This workshop is a great confidence
builder...........even though his book shows the techniques nothing could
replace the experience of working along with Peter. He also demoed sink
making, installations and lots of slides. Peter is high-energy, a great
and giving teacher.........he tells it all. He has an upcoming workshop
October 16-21, 2000. GO, GO , GO if you can. His phone number is

Hi Everyoue . I am thinking about taking one of Peter King's architechural
ceramics workshops. Has anyone been to one of these. It is my understanding
that you help with an instillation. Does anyone have suggestions on a
nearby affordable place to stay for the week? Thanks Vicki

Vicki,

Peter King came down to give us a "workshop" in the spring. Actually, he helped a group of us to create a huge, (12 feet high x12 feet wide) beautiful entryway for a new children's playground in Jacksonville Beach. Some of the participants (including Terry Nicholas who planned and designed the installation; and recruited the rest of the clay artist volunteers involved) had been to one of Peter's workshops before. They knew he was the guy to call. He came for 2 days, but stayed for 3.Started with a slide show/talk then we got down to it with Peter directing and working alongside.Months later, when we had the beast finished and fired he came back and helped us install it! He is a very cool guy and STRONG. Some of those pieces were quite heavy. Man, he worked hard in the hot hot summer sun. We learned how to make and install really really big! I think we were all amazed. We all enjoyed Peter tremendously.      His book Architectural Ceramics For the Studio Potter is available from The Potters Shop.

Vicki,
I took Peter's workshop last spring. It was well worth
it to me. I had been trying to do some architectural work
before but was struggling. The workshop was a real
jumpstart for me.
Peter usually will demonstrate making a fireplace surround
or some large-scale piece. He also demonstrates sinks, tiles,
molds, tables and pedastals. He took us to an installation
at clients home.
The whole week will seem a little overwhelming.
I have a background in tile setting and constuction which
was very helpful.
Anyway, go if you can, you won't regret it.
They will give you a list of hotels close by.

I took Peter's workshop in Florida several years ago. I went into the
workshop feeling I couldn't possibly work on the scale he does. After one
day I was confident enough to feel like I could tackle anything. He is a
fabulous teacher.

I invited Peter and Xinia to do a workshop at my studio last Easter. Once
again they dazzled everyone with their knowledge, generosity, energy and
creativity. In 4 days we slabbed and manipulated 1600 pounds of clay into
a wonderful arch.......a tribute to Chief Seattle. You can view it at my
website.

If you can go, then GO, GO GO to their workshops!!!

We just finished an amazing workshop with Peter King here in Northern
California constructing a huge fireplace surround and hearth. Peter's
energy and techniques covered made it the best workshop I have ever
attended. Not only did we complete the fireplace, we made molds, practiced
sprigging and press molding, Peter cast, molded and threw a sink... we did
large pots with a form, mouldings, installation techniques... the list goes
on and on. Comprehensive slide shows each morning gave us the opportunity
to see things we could not demo on site. Anyone thinking of attending a
Peter King workshop? Grab the opportunity when it arises. Peter is
amazingly generous and knowledgeable in his presentation.

It's my understanding he is doing a workshop in Brooklyn, NY this
week. You east coasters may want to take note of it. Stonehaus can be
reached at 850-438-3273.

Our stay in Pensacola will be for a one week Peter King workshop,
something I have wanted to do since I heard about him. Both Fred and
I will take the workshop. Fred is way more mechanical than I and he
will absorb it all on a whole different wavelength.

I will report back to you all afterwards. Would really like to hear
from anybody who has already participated in one of his workshops.

Peter King's Workshops are EXTRAORDINARY! He fills them with historical
references (by means of slides) and is a great workshop presenter that gets the
best from the participants.
The workshop I did with him many years ago at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, in
D.C., we designed and constructed a fireplace surround for the head of the
Corcoran Ceramics Dept. All the participants became involved in design as well
as construction----his demeanor encouraged free exchange of ideas and
development of the concept. Spending the week there was truly inspiration and has
helped me in t he commissions that I have done the last few years in my own
studio.
Peter is great fun to be with as well, and if your group has the opportunity
to dine with him, and he is a super cook, I hope you get to sample his grand
margaritas and guacamole. ....an added bonus to a tremendous experience.
Best of luck!

Hi,
You will really enjoy this experience. I did a three day with him and we
constructed an archway for our kiln room entryway. He has an incredible
amount of energy and his process in amazing. It is really amazing the amount
of clay that is used and that is the only thing that I found intimidating!
Bring a notebook and camera. Enjoy the warm climate and the experience. I am
sure it is much greater in his own studio.

Eleanora,
I took Peter's workshop in Pensacola last October. At first we thought it
might be cancelled because of the massive damage all over the area from
Hurricane Ivan, but the diehards came anyway and it was one of the best
experiences I have ever had.
I will second what others have already said, that Peter is a GREAT workshop
presenter who is extremely generous with his time and knowledge. What you
shouldn't forget also, is that his wife Xinia is a first rate ceramicist
and sculptor as well as being a serious "glaze meister" so when you take
the workshop at his studio in Pensacola, you get two for one! Both of them
and Anna who runs the office will do whatever it takes to make sure that
you get whatever you need to make your experience memorable.
Have a great time.
