Dear Clay People,

Paperclay:

I'm really hoping this course fills up, because I want to attend: I know
it's going to be a very worthwhile experience for serious ceramists. I just
found out that you probably haven't been told about it. Time's running
out...

Georgian College located in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, an hour north of
Toronto, has produced many accomplished potters and ceramists since the
clay program opened 25 years ago. The special clay courses this summer will
take place in the fully equipped ceramic studio there.

There are courses other than clay (fine arts, computer graphics, jewellery
and metals) - if you'd like info, fax/phone the college directly (see
below).

From the brochure:
-----
Resident Artist: Alek Sorotschynski

In 1990 Paper Clay was introduced to North America at the Banff Centre for
the Arts in Alberta. This method of working proved to be one of the most
exciting and challenging processes the professional group of ceramists had
ever encountered . It changed previous thoughts of clay and its
limitations. This hands-on workshop held in a proper ceramic facility will
be led by the Artist in Residence at that time in Banff, Alek
Sorotschynski. It is geared toward handbuilders and sculptors with previous
clay experience. Pieces will be fired daily with analysis and critique the
following morning.

July 14th - 18th (5 full days), CDN$335 (approx US$250). REGISTER NOW!!!
The minimum enrolment is 12, maximum 15 students.
This course is one of 11 that Georgian is offering specifically geared to
the experienced artist or craftsperson.

There are two student accomodation options, the near one (easy walking)
being the cheapest and simplest at CDN$120 for the week - self-catered,
bring your own sheets, etc., and the further more expensive one is by the
lake, and includes meals. Get the details from the College. Americans
should be aware that the Canadian dollar is a bargain these days...

-- I worked with Alek (and Roger Kerslake who is teaching a teapot course
the week before) at Georgian almost twenty years ago. Alek has a surprising
talent for sparking students, and finding new ways of seeing and making.
I'm a full-time potter, who finds it hard to find the time to experiment. I
view this as a real professional opportunity to explore a new technique,
that I haven't gotten around to doing on my own, with an experienced
paperclay sculptor.

Dear Eric

I was wondering if you can provide me with some contacts of people who have
been working in paperclay for at LEAST 2 YEARS. I have been researching and
exhibitng paperclay since later 1992 and would appreciate establishing
informal links with similarly experienced people. Western Australia (here)
has had local artists working paperclay since 1988 and as a result of a
local business making it commercially and the many articles arising from
Banff, its use is now spreading rapidly.
