oil in pugmill??

updated fri 28 feb 97

We were wondering if there is a certain kind of oil for the Venco Deairing
pugmill. when we purchased it a while back it did not come with
instructions.... dealing with the maintaince of it, except to clean it. As
your looking down on the pugmill there is to plugs, one is brass square plug
about 3/8" and the other is to the left with a red marking on it, and it uses
a allen wrench to open it up (plug)...I know how to drain the old oil out,but
I believe there is to different kinds of oil to use... Am I wrong, or just to
densly silicated... Please let me know so I can get back to mixing clay,
without burning up my mill.

Hi Jim: You don't say what size mill you have, but I am assuming that your
venco is powered by a SEW Eurodrive parallel helical gearmotor.

The side plug, with the red allen wrench fitting is the oil LEVEL. You add
gear oil through the top of the gearbox and with the red plug on the side
removed, watch for oil to exit. When all the excess oil has escaped through
the oil level plug hole, button it up and start pugging. The red plug
should be about 1/3 to 1/2 way up the side of the gearbox. It is important
to not overfill the gearbox, so let the oil drain completely from the level
hole on the side.

Venco recommends using multigrade 90-140 weight universal gear oil. I have
a copy of the SEW Eurodrive manual with Technical and Engineering Data for
all their drive systems and this is what they say:

For gearmotors operating at an ambient temperature of +32 to +104 degrees F.

Gulf Oil Co.--Gulf E.P. Lubricant S-100
Chevron Oil Co.--Chev. non-leaded Gear Compound 220
American Oil Co.--Spartan EP 220
Mobil Oil Co.--Mobilgear 630
Shell Oil Co.--Shell Omala Oil 220
Texaco Oil Co.--Meropa 220

I hope this helps. If I can be of any further assistance e-mail me at the
clubhouse. Craig Martell-Oregon

I have an old Walker mixer/pugger and have been wondering what type of
oil to use in its reduction gear case. I should probably change it or
top it up or something.\

Jim,
My newly bought mill came with instructions of using 90 weight oil on my pug
mill and 40 weight and on my de-airing compressor. Mine is also a Venco.

Hi Jim:

Mine came with instructions...

1. For the vacuum pump made by Clisby Industries:

"Top up with normal automotive crankcase oil - SAE 30 or 40 or Multigrade
20/40. Fill to center spot on sight glass." "Do not use friction modified
oils."

"Check oil level in vacuum pump weekly. Some oil will be carried past the
piston rings and exhausted. This is beneficial in keeping the plate valves,
springs, and sealing surfaces covered in oil and free of corrosion."

2. For the gear box: "The pug mill gear box has a top oil filter plug, a side
plug which defines the oil level, and a bottom plug for drainage. Remove the
oil level plug and check that the gear box has sufficient oil. Top with SAE
90 or SAE 140 oil as required."

"Gear box oil needs to be changed after 16,000 hours use. Where the pug mill
is only used for 1 or 2 hours per day, change the oil after 5 years service.
Use SAE 90 or 140 gear box oil."

3. The manufacturer is:

Peter,

In a heavy load gear box use 90 or 120 weight gear oil. It's heavy
weight oil needed to withstand the shear stress in the gear box.
