Recent works by Madgalene Odundo, a well-known Kenyan ceramist, will go
on view at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art (950
Independence Ave., S. W., Washington, DC) on September 18 and closes
January 2, 1997. The exhibition of 15 vessels was organized by the
University Art Museum, University of California, Santa Barbara. The
museum's director, Marla C. Berns, served as curator and is the author
of the accomplanying catalogue "Cermic Gestures: New Vessels by
Magdalene Odundo." A theater adjacent to the exhibition screens two
related videos: "Ceramic Gestures: A Conversation with Magdalene Oduno"
(9-minutes) and "the Hands of the Potter" (26 minutes). The latter video
is available for loan from the museum's department of education. On
Saturday, October 26, Magdalene Odundo will offer a demonstration from
10:0 0 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. In addition, she will present a discussion of
her work in the exhibition at 3:00 p.m. The events are free and open to
the public. The space where the demonstration will take place can seat
150 people. The exhibition will travel to Indiana Museum of Art in
Bloomington, January 17 to March 15, 1997.
