Hi, Lisa.....

In response to your question about how I like the new equipment......

Well, everything is in place now. The slab roller and extruder arrived last
week and my son set them up for me. I have to tell you...I throw about four
tons of clay a year and I can see that I will have about a year's worth of
leaning curve to get into these two pieces of equipment. I used the slab
roller to make some picture frames with my porcelain and they came out quite
good. I still have to decide whether to use glass or plastic on the frames
and how to set it up. I have the new frame backs from Axner. I don't like
the imprint that the canvas makes on the clay. It seems as if I am taking
away from what the slab roller has done when I work the imprint out of the
slab, in terms of evenness. I also bought six new bat molds from Bailey. I
mixed and poured two hundred lbs. of Hydrocal into hump molds last Sunday.
What a mess, but it was fun. It will be next weekend before they are dry
enough to use. I extruded a 2-1/2" square of porcelain and, with a slab for
the bottoms, made a bunch of votive candle holders with cutouts, etc. It is
difficult to make even cuts across the extrusion, a skill I will have to
achieve.. It seems as if the ideas which are still churning around in my
head like a tornado will have to take their turn with my time. The shows are
fast upon us...The only negative thought I have with both of them is that I
put considerable effort into making my studio mauve and cream, very relaxing
for me and these pieces are the most garrish blue. As far as the way they
work - excellent...very professional tools....they do everything they are
intended to do and more....

Anyway, my overall feeling is that I am really happy to have them and I think
great things are forthcoming here.... perhaps I am a bit in awe of them..I
like what I have done for my booth this year and I think next year's booth
will be spectacular...I've decided to end my show season Oct. 5th this year
and not do the Christmas shows. This will give me much needed time to
play....It amazes me how we just keep getting better and better...all you
have to do is keep at it.....

I also have a Northstar Slab Roller, and I love it. I was able to solve the
problem with the imprint from the canvus by lining it on both sides with
(unattached) heavyweight Pellon. Hope that someone out there in Clayart-Land ha
another suggestion.

Sue,

One of the easiest ways I've found to remove the canvas imprinting while
maintaining the evenness of the slab is to dampen the slab surface slightly
and lightly scrape the surface with a wide smoother/scraper that
the drywall/plaster installation folks use to smooth wet plaster surfaces (the
one I use most is 15" wide). A couple of swipes and you've got a perfectly
smooth, even clay surface. You can buy scrapers of various widths in most
hardware stores, Lowes, Builder's Square, Tru-value, etc.

Please enlighten us (me). What is Pellon? Where did you purchase it?

Thanks, Bob
