I was recently listening to one of those taped lectures by super
teachers, this one was on archeology. As it turns out, pots were a
major trading commodity among ancient peoples. Also, there were lots
of hunter/gatherer/cultivator cultures way back when. So nomadic
tribes could trade with more stable groups and carry the pots with
them--probably did lots of cooking in those pots before metals were
discovered and used.

So even back then in the good old days, people bought functional
ware---so maybe things haven't changed THAT much! But the Jomon
people, they REALLY knew how to decorate a pot!!! I wonder if, at one
of those ancient craft shows someone asked a Jomon potter--How do I
use this? Those points and whorls on the rim might be difficult to drink
from....
