Hi Carol:

The NY Gift Show has many sections and may venues. The handmade section
for new people is at the NY Coliseum and is juried. They just had the
juring for the Aug show. The general gift section has everything in it and
there craftspeople would be next to manufactured stuff. There are also
several other sections that have both crafts and manufactured work in them,
such as At Home, Accent On Design. Its been a good show for me and several
other potters that I know who also do it. I do also know some potters who
did it once and said they would never do it again as it was bad for them.
So you have to try.

I participated in the "Accent on Design" section of the New York
International Gift Show about a year and a half ago. My own work would
have been better served in another section, such as "International" or
"Hand-Made" or "Craft". Fairly precise repeatability was a feature of most
work in "Accent" and my work is not easily precisely reproduced even though
I have a fairly coherent line. There is always variation throughout the
pieces. It's fairly important to remember that buyers pass though at a
phenomenal rate and pass only brief periods of time to make their initial
judgment; usually they have a good idea of what they want/need and they
place orders based on what they see in the show. They want to know that
what they'll get is what they see. I did a fair business but not as much as
I would have expected.

I shared my space with two other artists and their experience tended to
confirm my thinking. One was a wood worker who works to fairly detailed
previously designed standards and he was able to generate a very good
business. The other was a glass worker who did not generate nearly as many
sales with his blown pieces as with his uniform production pieces.

Both of these artsits have returned to the show and have increased their
sales well and believe that "repeatability" is an important feature of
sales in the show overall and in "Accent" in particular, but not so much so
in "International" or "American Craft".

Emily and Bob,
Thank you very much for the informatiom. I think I will apply, and
try for the Craft or American craft area. I make functional art (ex. wine
goblets with free standing coral stems and shell shapes for cups) I do have
a wide range from dishes in the shapes and colors of salt water fish to vases
with wave cut outs on rim in teals, seafoam and peach. Many pieces are
lustered. My work is all hand built and very unquie. I do production and
one-of-a-kinds. I thank you again and hope any one else will pass on
information.
