Does anyone know which PURPLE MASON STAIN (name and/or number) will stay
purple up to ^6? How about ^10? Also, any guidelines for percentage to
use in making a slip from dry ingredients (as opposed to using clay
slurry)? OR....ratio of stain to gerstley borate if making a wash?
Seems like this has been posted before (??l tsp. stain to 2 tsp. GB??),
but I'm most interested in getting a purple slip using the stain.

Thanks, you guys!

Hi Laura!

Here's the little bit I know and have used successfully:

A) For Oxide stains:
3 teaspoons oxide
2 " Gerstley Borate

I have brushed this over clear glazes - oxidation or reduction. The
reduction is much
better and I wait for my teacher to fire up her kiln......

B) Mason Stain Mixture % amounts:
Mason Stain 60.00
Frit #3124 40.00

This can be painted on bisque ware, clear sprayed over" Ox. or Red.
firing. I found this in the
Glaze Data base and have used it successfully. However, purple stains
must not be used with
zinc containing (clear) glazes. They will turn an ugly brown. There
are also other Mason stains that
do not do well with zinc, if you need to know which I will get out my
notes... I used the Mulberry
stain under my Soto Clear and got this awful color. Nothing like
mistakes to teach a person
to do a little research!

I'm kind of new at all this myself. So I experiment. I reckon you are going to
get several answers
to this query. Hope I have give just a little bit of help!! :-)

Pansy Purple, Mason #6385 will remain stable through Cone 6.

It runs around 15-20$ per Pound

Hi there Laura in Oregon

I have been using Mason stain # 6385 called, appropriately enough, Pansy
Purple, not in a slip, but in Robin Hopper's clear glaze, on top of white
glaze at cone 6. I think it would likely fire higher but haven't tried it.
I use 1 level teaspoon per 4 oz of prepared glaze and it's a nice purple.
Some people here use it with frit 3134-- 1 tsp each in about 4 oz water, or
with neph sy instead of the frit. I would expect that you' d need a bit
more if it's in slip.

Good luck.

We use these two Mason stains at the pottery where i am currently employed.
Both give purple and are ok at cone 6. Mason 6360 and mason 6303. We also
mix our stains 50/50 with frit 3124.
Bob.

It's been awhile but I've used both Deep Orchid (#6303) and Lavender
(#6319) to ^10. I believe the Deep Orchid was the most purple of the two-
I added 5% to white glaze.

in with slip made from throwing body works for me. It is NOT a purple but a
nice lavender. Pansy purple will work at cone 6. Regards Debra
