kilns - blocking the flu exit

I have a 30cu ft gas down draft kiln (Minn. Flattop) using 6 natual draft
burners that are oriented 3 on each side directing the heat upward. My
question is when stacking ware should I create a flu exit channel under the
first kiln shelf or can I stack ware right up to the flu opening. If the
answere is to create the channel, should I create a baffle system to break up
the flow of gases and create turbulence or not. Between books and friendly
advice I've been getting a lot of variation on the answere. Thanks.
