kiln shelves--cone 10-11--high alumina

A large pottery supply company--Baileys--sells a high alumina shelf rated
for cone 10-11--the shelf is made in England by a company that used to be
Diamond --so I believe--these are the same shelves which they provide with
their gas kilns as I understand it--does anyone have experience with these
shelves as I am about to purchase a few of these shelves--the cost seems
reasonable--$30 or so for a 12x24x3/4 shelf which weighs about 18 lbs..(the
weight is the major draw back for me at this time)-I am told that these
shelves are not as problematic as the silicon carbide nitride bonded
shelves and are about half the cost--I wish I could afford Advancers but
they are a little out of my budget just now---I would really appreciate any
feedback that I could get on these shelves..Best Wishes--Marshall

Marshall,
I may be contradicted by 1000 other potters, but my experience has been that
they warp & sag. If you fire to cone 10, you're going fairly close to their
top rating repeatedly. Even though I would scrape off kiln wash and turn
them over I still got warping. Another factor is if you get glaze drips
that have to be ground away the shelves are much softer than silicon
carbide, and will grind away with the glaze. Silicon carbide is more
expensive, but lasts longer with proper care. Good luck.

Hi Marshall:
I bought these High Alumina shelves (14 x28 x1") from Bailey a
couple of years ago and I've fired them to cone 10 approx. 50 times.
So far, no cracks and warpage has been minimal. I've flipped them
about 3 times.
They are extremely heavy though, especially in the large size that I
use. As a result, I started stacking my kiln from back to front
instead of side by side. This way I leave the back shelves in place
and only restack the front.
Hope this helps.

Hi Marshall,
The shelves you're thinking of purchasing are excellent and will last a
very long time. We used these shelves in the Geil downdraft gas kiln at
Colemans studio. They are pretty heavy, but really nice not to have to
grind accidental glaze off of them! ds.

my equivalent shelves from Bailey weigh about 22 pounds and are terrible to
handle when placing in the back tier of the kiln. Isn't there a lighter
weight shelf of this size. My back would be very grateful for this
information??????
