kiln post clay formula

I've been looking into making my own kiln posts and need some feedback from
those who have done this. Cardew, in Pioneer Pottery, has a section on
refractories which gets into the formation of mullite at high
temperatures,use of multiple grades of grog , use of talc at lower
temperatures etc. He also gives several formulas. The one which seems
most likely for me is:

Bond Clay 40 (I'm not sure what he means here.)
Refractory Grog, coarse grade 30
Dust-free fine-grade grog 30

Back in October Gary Shaffer submitted a formula which he got from a CM
article in the '70's. His posts have lasted for 12 years in cone 9
reduction. It is :

Grog 50
EPK 25
xxxSagger Clay 25 ( What is this stuff?)

If anyone has information on other types on ingedients, other formulas,
theoretical advice etc. please post it.

xxxsagger clay can be purchased at standard ceramics in pittsburgh pa.
it is a clay that forms mullite readily i beleive, and that helps in
thermal shock of repeated firings.

I believe the CM article was in April, l978, by Elmer Taylor.
There is a lot of good information in there, it would be worth
your time to look it up and read it.
