jiggering clay body questions

updated fri 28 feb 97

Hi,

We are frustrated at our clay body in using it on our jolly jigger (Yo Ho!).
Too wet and it shrinks so much off the mold that it cracks. Too dry and it
freezes up the spindle or tears off.

Any advice on how to get clay just right? I think Kenny says jiggering clay
should be a little shorter than throwing clay. Chappell seems to think the
same clay body works fine for both. It occurred to me that deflocculation
would give me a softer body without increasing the water content, but others
wiser than I am say deflocculated bodies are a flabby pestilence, to be
avoided at all costs.

Thanks in advance for any help or direction to reference works that describe
the process in detail (all my books give it a minute and call it a day).

Jeff,

We make jigger/jolly platters up to about 600mm diameter using a fine
earthenware clay. We use the same clay for throwing.

I don't think clay for jigger/jolly work needs to be specially formulated.
What I think is VERY important is the design of the plaster mould and I
recommend that you look at this area to solve your cracking problems. In
particular, the design needs to allow you to remove the work early - we use
compressed air to assist in removal.

Regards

Denis
