itc coatings on silicon carbide shelves?

updated fri 28 feb 97

I am trying to compile any info on using ITC coatings on silicon carbide
shelves or on Thorley type shelves.

We are salt firing and need info about which shelves to use. To be honest,
if ITC can protect the Thorley type shelves, we don't want to spend the
money on SiCarbide shelves. If need be, we will spend the bucks-will ITC
work to spare the SiCarbide shelves also?

What do you salt/soda gurus think? Should we quit stalling and buy the
expensive boys or should some experimentation be in order?

Thanks again all you great people in Clay land for this wonderful source of
info and support.

>Pat, something to consider: Dont really know about the itc coatings in
salt. Do know that claytype (mullite corderite?) will not last long in salt
kiln. But as a cheapy type potter I wouldnt buy expensive shelves for a salt
kiln if i already had cracked or broken silicarbides from another kiln i
would "retire them" to the salt kiln. In Berea we dusted dry alumina hydrate
onto silicon carbide shelves with a flour sifter. After firing simply dump
the used alumina hydrate thru a screen to easily remove any wadding material
and the alumina hydrate can be re-used. This makes for easy flipping of
shelves vs having to grind off built up layers of kiln wash. Word of caution
....this was done in kiln using nat. draft venturies and I have never tried
it with forced air burners so dont know if turbulence would blow the powder
around in the kiln or not.

I used ITC on silicon carbide shelves in soda firing. They are fine.
Marcia in Montana
(Also used it of fiber cemented to the INTERIOR of the door. It is fine,
too. Stils were dipped in it too. AMAZING STUFF!
