Greetings All!

After monitoring Clayart for a long time, and learning a great deal, I have a
question of my own to ask: What do those of you who are making art full time
do for medical insurance coverage? a. Do without, b. have dependent coverage
on spouse's plan, buy it yourself? If you buy it, can you give me an idea
where to look?

After many years in the warmth of the corporate womb I am giving serious
thought to quitting all that and doing what I really want to do. One of the
big stick points is what I'll do if I get sick.

Sorry if this has been well-talked about here before but I haven't seen much
about it and I'd really appreciate some idea of what others do about health
coverage.

Darryl- One of the best small business health insurance providers is John Alden
Life Insurance. Look in yellow pages & call until you find an agent that sells
their products. I have been insured under them for almost 10 years. My 3 1/2 yr.
old son has cerebral palsy & we have had very few problems with them. Note- I
didn't say 0 problems. My monthly premium is based more on my age than his
requirements. The older you get the more expensive insurance becomes. They don't
raise your premium in accordance with what they have to pay out- they raise (&
sometimes adjust downward) according to your region. A big plus is they cannot
cancel you if you get very sick or have some other reason for their having to
pay out a lot. Insurance companies are seldom easy to get along with- but
overall we are pleased with their service.
I have had 4 different providers in my 45 yrs. & now have no choice but to stick
with John Alden due to my sons disability. I can think of worse companies to be
stuck with.
Good luck with your search-

Finally, a question I think I can answer. (I'm the potter/private
practioner) Many of my peers who are self employed and therfore self
insured have opted for high deductible coverage with good provisions for
serious or catastrophic illness. If you are young, healthy and have a
good family history, you might even set up your own savings account for
health insurance. The laws in several states are changing, making it
possible for individuals to purchase health insurance at group rates.
In the third case- buying a traditional policy at a group rate- be sure
to review long term care provisions- because that's what you really need
to worry about. The high deductible policies make sense because of the
lower premiums. The main thing is really research your policy and make
sure you understand what is covered.

Hi all,

The message from the potter/practitioner really makes lots of sense. I know
people who don't buy insurance because they don't think they can afford it (and
besides they're healthy) ...well... Without getting into lots of details, and
at the risk of being gloomy, I knew a very healthy 28 yr old who suffered a
head injury and ran up $200,000 in just 6 weeks of intensive care. Had he not
been insured, his wife would never have been able to pay the bills. And this
was 7 years ago! When you think about it, that's what insurance is really for
-- to keep you from going bankrupt in an emergency.

this debate can go on for years.
so, please bring it to a halt.

after working on some ideas for the potters council
it was obvious that insurance and state aid varies
so much from place to place that no answer is possible.

what california does, maine does not.
etc. etc. etc.
