If you really want to understand your glazes you would be well advised
to be able to analyse them into Seger (Unity) formula or % Weight
Formula.
You would then see what basic oxides you had in your recipe ( as
distinct from amphoteric or acidic oxides). These basic oxides can
divide into alkalis (e.g. K2O, Na2O) or alkaline earths (e.g. CaO, MgO,
BaO). In Seger (Unity) formula terms you might find that an alkali glaze
had 0.7 K2O/Na2O and 0.3 CaO/MgO. An alkaline earth glaze would perhaps
have these figures reversed.
A good reference for this is David Green's book, 'A Handbook of Pottery
Glazes' ISBN 0-571-10218-2
