glaze changes due to water

Hi All!
It seems that it's time for a water softener to enter my life! I'm afraid
of the changes that removing all that calcium, rust, etc. and adding
traces of salt will do to my hard earned glazes (^6 ox.) Have any of you
changed the water and had glaze changes? Our water is rated 25% for
hardness, or so the Culligan guy said.
As always, I'm grateful for the wealth of companionship and information
so freely given here. Thanks in advance for any info. Marilyn in New York

This thread is of great interest to me. I followed the discussion of the ^6
oxidation floating blue and the suggestion that distilled water be used to
prevent chemical contamination. Here, in Astoria, ALL our water is rain
water. (BIG surprise hungh?) It is extremely soft and I use 1/2 cup tide
liguid for 5 loads in the commercial machines. Are there some "limits" re:
water softness that we should know about? Oh, our water is very clean,
except when "turbidity" is a problem, like it rains too hard for too long
and stirs up the stuff that's precitated out at the bottom of the pool.

Hi Marilyn:

Where in NY are you? I have a friend who was from NYC and moved
upstate(Catskill area) and found that many of her cone 6 glazes didn't work
any more. To much mineral content. So now she brings in water from NYC
for those glazes that she really wants to work like they used to when she
lived here.

I have two taps that are not connected to the water softener and I get my
water from them for mixing glazes.

I have not followed this line as much as I should have but instead
of adding water softeners why not purchase a water filtration system that
helps to remove these minerals (the insoluable ones)....Better yet, also
try using distilled water which is expensive I know, about $1.00 per
gallon, around these parts. If it works for the better then check around
for quantity discounts of distilled water. Obviously household water
softeners only add more minerals and don't remove minerals. ...Marshall
