CP-

When I set up a studio in Colorado this past summer, I went to bakeries
both independent and supermarket bakeries (glazing and icing come in
those buckets) and deli-type restaurants. The going price seemed to be
$2.00 per bucket with lid.

The icing is greasy (no surprise) and those buckets are harder to clean.
However, at one supermarket, they gave me the bucket because they hadn't
cleaned it, and it was their policy to give them away if they hadn't been
cleaned! At my local supermarket here in Pittsburgh, the supermarket
bakery also gives them away, although they do a VERY superficial cleaning.

The deli buckets are ones that pickles come in. They aren't greasy but
that pickle smells does linger, even after washing with a bleach
solution. It just makes the storage area smell like garlic pickles! Most
people seem to be aware of bakeries as a source of buckets & lids; I had
much better luck at the delis. Also, the fast food hamburger joints
(MacDonalds, Burger King, etc) who serve pickle slices, buy their pickles
in 5 gallon buckets with lids.

Latex paint also comes in 5 gallon buckets with nice lids. So if you know
any professional painters, that may be a good source.

I have also seen them for sale in the Mile Hi Ceramics catalog in Denver,
but they wanted around $5 per bucket with lid. Since I was buying 12 of
them I was willing to do a little washing (outdoors--this was summer) to
save a few bucks.
