gas kiln costs

Hi again - I wanted to make two separate messages for two very different
topics. I belong to a working Potters' Guild. Currently we rent space from
our local arts center. This year when we got our contract our rent was more
than doubled and we were put on notice that the current amount would be
trippled in three years. None of us are professional potters, but some do
sell their work. Many pot very little, but just enjoy the group and
companionship. The increase in our rent will have to be paid by a
substantial increase in dues (presently $12.00/mo will go to possibly
$60.00/mo. or higher)

We feel that we may have to either fold or find other space. The thing that
some use the most at the arts center is the gas kiln. Can anyone give me a
list of all the costs which would have to be figured into building/buying
and running our own? The kiln we use now is 24 cu. ft. so we would want
something similar.

Thanks again.

Penny

Penny,
Even at $60 per month, you would have to consider yourself on the positive
end of that arrangement. Most commercial kilns of the 24cu.ft. size will
range from $3,000 on the low end upwards and to build your own is the better
bet, but even more expensive. The Potters Guild that I belong to now has a
24 cu.ft. (internally) gas kiln (we use natural gas) and on the most active
months Sept., Oct. & Nov. we use around $250 of gas. If you figure in the
overhead of renting a new space, new kiln(s), plumbing for it, etc., etc.
$60.00 per month might not look so bad. Our Guild charges $200 per month
for space which includes use of all facilities and I hear that someplaces in
the north & midwest are charging up to $400 per month. Maybe there is a way
for you to find more people to share the space, facilities and
cost...particularly if not all folks are there 100% of the time. Hang in
there...I think you have a good deal!
