A friend of mine recently returned from Australia and is looking for a
substitution for Frit 4194 for Raku. She is unable to find 4194 here.

Laura,

As soon as I say this, I will no doubt be trampled into the dust
by those who know a lot more about it than me, but: for raku
purposes, I have found most frits to be pretty much
interchangeable. She could try P54 or P25...I use them generally
just because I have sacks full sitting about among all the
"mystery bags" that are in the clay/glaze storage area. It is
intriguing to inherit a room full of "stuff" that is unmarked,
unknown, years old, ordered by whim apparently, and delivered
without any identification on the bags...and I have hundreds of
pounds of actual colemanite, for some reason stored on shelves
about 10 feet off the ground in the clay mixing room...by someone
taller and stronger than me, these are 100 lb bags. We are using
them up -slowly, screening first for interesting lumps, of
course...

And for those who love to hate it, I have had no problems. So far.

Anyway, try substituting. Might work, and if not, might be
intersting anyway.

>Laura,
>I go with Dannon on this as well, the best Raku glaze recipe I have is:
ANY fritt-85 (parts by weight), China clay (kaolin)-15. I add 1.5
bentonite to stop it settling like cement
