JB,

According to Insight, here is the analysis for Custer feldspar

K2O 0.01
NaO2 0.01
Fe2O3 0.01
TiO2 0.03
Al2O3 1.00
SiO2 2.03

Hope this helps.

Excuse me for barging in here but the above is not the right formula for
Custer.

I have checked three sources, Foresight, The Ceramic Gofer (old download)
and the analysis I use from the mine. The are all similar.

69.02 SiO2
17.13 Al2O3
0.15 Fe2O3
10.08 K2O
3.02 Na2O3
0.03 CaO
0.30 Loss on Ignition.

That gives a formula with unity on the Al2O3 as follows.

0.03 CaO
0.64 K2O
0.29 Na2O
..01 Fe2O3
1.00 Al2O3
6.85 SiO2

Ratio of 6.85

Ooops! Well, is my face red-- You're right, of course, Ron. I must
have had the highlighter on the wrong material. Insight's Custer formula is
actually very close to what you've listed. Sorry 'bout that.

We get a truckload of custer feldspar in a few times a year and
they send an analysis each time. There is quite a bit of variation.
Here is the last one:

Lab No. P-7425
LOI .3
SiO2 68.2
Fe2O3 .12
CaO .3
MgO tr
Na2O 3.3
K2O 10.5

Ron: I was reading your note to Cindy about the anaylsis for Custer Spar and
find myself a bit puzzeled.

Custer is known as a potash spar, indicating that the potassium is higher
than the sodium. I have Insight also I 'm also getting strange results that
defy my best judgement. My knowledge of this tells me that the potassium
should be higher than the sodium. Perhaps you can explain it in more detail.

Bob-- apparently- in some strange way- your copy of Insight (and at least
one other!) got contaminated. I just checked my copy, and found:

0.030 CaO
0.660 K2O
0.330 Na2O
0.010 Fe2O3
1.040 Al2O3
7.100 SiO2

as you can see- the predominant flux IS the Potash, and the Silica is higher
than with most Spars. To a first approximation, almost all spars are near 1
mole total fluxes, 1 mole alumina, and 6 moles silica. The formula you gave
is apparently a clay, possibly one of the kaolins, since it has the
proportions of alumina to silica that are typical of them.

This leads me to think I had better check the other materials in the list,
for accuracy.
