flocculating slip

Does anyone know why people flocculate slip for use
in joining. It would seem to me that because flocculating
increases the amount of water necessary to make a workable
slurry that the slips high shrinkage would introduce drying
problems. Shouldn't slip be deflocculated when used for joining?
