electric kiln for sale

updated fri 2 dec 05

John Post on wed 16 apr 97

I have an Evenheat 5320 Deluxe electric kiln for sale. The firing chamber
is 17.5" dia. x 22.5" deep.
It uses a 30 amp wall receptacle (6-30R). It has a new cone sitter tube and
limit timer motor. There are no shelves or posts included. I am asking
$350. I am located in Sterling Heights, which is about a 20 minute drive
north of Detroit, Michigan. The buyer is responsible for picking the kiln up.

I purchased this kiln from a local elementary school. They were getting a
new one because of the problems with the limit timer and kiln sitter. I
have replaced both of those parts and the kiln is as good as new. The art
teacher who had been using only ran it a few times a year to cone 06.

If you need more info or are interested in purchasing this kiln, e-mail me
direct at johnpost@c3net.net.

A couple of weeks ago I posted a notice
offering a Crusader for sale. No responses
except one inquiry as to where I lived.

A quick reiteration of the salient facts:
Crusader 294S - cone 10 - 10.5 cu. ft. -
13.44kw - 240 volt - 64 amp - single phase -
chamber dimensions: 29 diam x 27 high

Comes with two bases (double thick floor) -
4 1/2 tall height-extender ring (w/ elements)
Dawson sitter - 4 Corderite shelves - 6 high-
alumins shelves (these are half shelves)

sits on a standard steel frame.

3 new elements, not yet installed.

8 to 12 bricks need replacing.

Always fired to bisque and cone 6, never to
cone 10.

fob Naperville, IL

900 dollars takes it all.

I've also had one local inquiry . . . a reply to a
notice I stuck up on a school studio bulletin
board. No sale but some well-meant but very
discouraging comments, to wit:

The price is not only high, it's probably worth
only 200 to 300 dollars by itself without the
shelving.

Question: Can this be the case? Is my old
Crusader that poorly thought of in the
market?

I'm asking for opinions here so I can price this
thing realistically, or some reassurance that it
is fairly priced as it is, and it may just take
some time to find the person who agrees.

Thanks for your input,

Curt Nelson

Curtis,
I am no kiln expert... But, I bought my kiln for $200
it has quite a bit bigger chamber dimension, and came
with all the furniture, glazes, molds, cones, and
evean lunch and good conversation.. This was when??? a
year or so, and the kiln was fairly new (buisness
closing), and a diffrent company.. A friend of mine
bought one similar to mine in size but I think older
for $150, and she also got furniture, stilts, many
many glazes, and clay.. And to end out trio, similar
kiln again, and similar bonuses plus those pottery
tattoo things (can't remember what they were called
and she couldn't give them away, hahahahaha) she
bought it for $75, but I think it was one of those
friend of a friend deals...

But in my years I have sold cars for crazy prices,
with paitence, so I suppose any thing can happen..

Just a thought...

Curt, I'm certainly no expert on used kiln prices, but my opinion is that
your price is a bit high for a kiln that needs repair. I've recently
bought a couple of used kilns in a pretty small community, and I wouldn't
have paid your price. Both the kilns were in like-new condition and though
smaller than your Crusader, were proportionately much cheaper.

Used kilns in excellent condition seem to be widely available, perhaps
because they were purchased by folks who afterward discovered that they
were less enthralled by the hobby than they'd hoped. Your problem is
compounded, I think, because your kiln is a large one, and thus would
appeal primarily to a production maker. She would likely to be aware of the
wide availablity of used kilns, and so might be willing to wait until one
in excellent condition comes along.

I don't mean to be discouraging, and as I say, I have only limited
experience to judge by, but I think your market will be someone who's
setting up a studio on a very short shoestring. You might have to drop
your price considerably to attract such a buyer.

I think its great to see what prices used studio equipment is going for. It
would certainley help us not over charge or overpay if we had an idea what
the highest average price was.

My Paragon electric is 17.5" dia X 18" deep. Dawson kiln sitter.
Excellent condition. Cost $300 with shelves and furniture and base. (EBay)
My old Crusader is 24" X 24" deep. No kiln sitter. Cost approx $250 with
many shelves and lots of furniture. I say approx because the total cost of
$400 included an Amaco test kiln- expensive, lots and lots of glaze
chemicals, and replacement elements for both kilns, plus tools and books.
(rec.crafts.pottery)
We are installing a Dawson ramp sitter on the Crusader- $165. Almost
digital but far less cost.
I would absolutely never have a kiln shipped. Tried that and the boxes
were actually trailing powdered brick as the UPS gentleman struggled the two
containers to our door. Insurance reimbursed me several months later.
Check EBay for "kilns." Location is given. Also, go to the newsgroup,
"rec.crafts.pottery" where I found my old Crusader which was a close-out of
a potters studio. I checked for "Crusader" on our ClayArt thread. Brad
Sondahl mentioned owning an oldie that worked just fine. There was a
beautiful Paragon 18 X 18 with kiln sitter for only $150 here in Yuma in the
newspaper. The lady thought she'd like to make Christmas gifts, but now only
wanted the ugly thing off her patio.
When buying from an individual, go with cash in hand. Make your offer.
They want that space-taking thingo out of there. Be prepared to load it then
and there. If it looks workable and the price is low, elements and switches
aren't that expensive. Do not pay a lot. No need to. As I tell my kids when
they think some used item will never again be available if they don't pay
the asking price, 'There's always another used car lot down the road!"

Best wishes,
Catherine in Yuma, AZ

I have an old "Norman" kiln for sale in Long Island.

It is 18 X18 ----the brick is in "like new" condition. Asking $175-----but I
have to get rid of it because I'm moving, therefore the best offer will take
it.
