Dear Clayarters,
I am fairly new to firing. I bought a second hand Skutt a little while
ago. It came with a kiln sitter. Now I understand that I need to know how
many degrees per hour the kiln rises. Is this true? or can I fire on a
schedule? I have done several glaze firings with mixed results.

TIA,

I have been taught to fire a Skutt with sitter as follows:
Low = 2 hours
Medium = 2 hours
High = until cone breaks (^6), usually 10+ hours. I think the timing
varies with the age of your kiln or its elements and maybe also by how
much ware you have loaded inside.

Re: message from Anne Yagoda of Central New Jersey:

I would strongly recommend obtaining a copy of Richard Zakin's "ELECTRIC
KILN CERAMICS" SECOND EDITION. That will discuss and answer almost all of
your questions concerning both bisque and glaze firings

Good luck.
