dry glaze chemical and shelf cleaning

Hello,
I have recently had a problem (to put it mildly) with a glaze i have been
using. The glaze is a temmoku and consists of corning stone, whiting, china
clay, flint and Rio. It now Dives off the pot onto my shelf,,,,no
dripping,,,a clear Dive off the pot onto the shelf. If it is due to one of
the glze ingredients i suspect it to be the corning stone and/or china clay
as I hve been using the other ingr. (w/the exception of the RIO) in other
glazes without any problems. I did notice the glaze looked slightly
different in color ( a littler redder) after mixing but i didn't pay much
attention to that as i thought it was just a different batch of RIO.
Question: DO/CAN dry glaze ingredients go bad? AND/OR...has anyone out there
had problems with Cornwall stone and/or china clay? These chemicals are OLD
Also, (almost afraid to say) I purchased a bunch of Chemicals from someone
about a year ago...Everything was marked....The cornwall Stone and ChinaClay
came out of that batch,,,I realize the gal could have made a mistake sigh>
RE: shelf cleaning,,,,,Because of the big mess I went out and bought an angle
grinder (after reading about shelf cleaning on the list...THANK U!) and a
Silicon Carbide Cup to fit it.....worked well....and I found something
else...a Diamond Cutter Disk (suppose to last 4-eva) Works even BETTER!!! One
zing and the glaze is gone!!!! (although expensive)
Question: If i were to close my eyes and run my hand across the shelf
you'd never know that there was a spill....however, there is a discoloration
on my shelf where the glaze was....WILL THIS BUBBLE UP in my next firing? Do
I need to Kiln wash (uugh) my shelf? I wonder about this because when my
cone 08's melted in the wrong direction onto my shelf...even after hand
grinding them (uugh) i was not able to put a pot there cuz it would
stick,,,,although that spot was shiney....these spots are dull....
Do I have to kiln wash? Please say no...LoL
Thank you very much, Have a great day!

Try taking your silicon carbide shelves to a sandblaster for cleaning.
Sometimes, depending on the quantity, the cost can be as low as a dollar per
shelf. Sand blasting even removes the glaze that has managed to work its way
into the pourous serface.
